Gerald Emmett Byrne, Jr., M.D., 78, formerly of Miami, FL and recently of Naples, FL died May 17, 2016.  Born in Chicago, December 31, 1937, he was the son of the late Gerald E. and Angela Genevieve Kilboy Byrne.

 

He graduated from St. Catherine of Genoa grammar school in 1951; Mendel Catholic High School in 1955; St. Joseph’s College in 1959; and St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1963.  Dr. Byrne completed postdoctoral training in Pathology and Hematopathology at St. Louis University and the University of Chicago where he was one of the first two fellows in Hematopathology in the United States.

 

Following completion of his training, Dr. Byrne entered the U.S. Air Force as a Major and was assigned to the Malcom Grow USAF Hospital at Andrews Air Force Base in Camp Springs, Maryland.

 

After serving in the USAF, he returned to the University of Chicago as an Assistant Professor of Pathology and Director of the Clinical Hematology Laboratory from 1971-1975.  In 1975, Dr. Byrne became Associate Professor of Pathology at the University of Miami (Florida) School of Medicine.  He was promoted to full professor in 1980.   During his tenure at the University of Miami, he served as Director of Hematopathology and Director of Clinical Pathology. He was Director of Residency Training for 15 years.

 

Dr. Byrne was highly sought after to provide continuing education programs for pathologists, hematologists, and oncologists.  He frequently spoke at meetings of state and national pathology societies. Dr. Byrne was President of the Florida Society of Pathology, 1986-1987.

 

Of all these accomplishments, he was most proud of his family.  Gerald “Jerry”, will be missed by his loving wife, Maxine Trivelli Byrne of 55 years; son, Christopher, his wife, Julia and grandson, Joseph all of Marco Island, FL; daughter, Rebecca, her husband, Anthony Malloy and grandchildren, Mitchell, Rachel, Anthony, Jr. and Shannon all of Riverside, IL; daughter, Erin, her husband, Stephen Pierce and grandchildren, Samuel, Anna, and Baby Jacob Gerald all of Mishawaka, IN; sister, Patricia Ann Byrne Sonnicksen of Glenview, IL. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Geraldine Angela Byrne Swallow.

 

Jerry’s family will forever remember him for his kindness, generosity and dedication.  He exemplified the character and integrity of a true gentleman.  He was especially grateful for his friends who brought such joy to his life and for the privilege of working with many colleagues who tirelessly made patient care their priority.   His Irish eyes and beautiful smile will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him dearly.

Visitation is Sunday, May 22nd from 2:00-7:00 p.m. at Panozzo Bros. Funeral Home, 530 W. 14th Street, Chicago Heights, IL 60411.  Family and friends will meet at Christ the King Church, 9235 S. Hamilton Ave., Chicago. for a 10:00 AM Funeral Mass.  Entombment will be at the Mausoleum of the Archangels, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Worth, IL.
